With the release of JBC 35–2 we have produced and published our 18th electronic Journal. These issues have showcased award–winning imagery not only from our own Association members, but many other outside groups as well. Your Journal continues to be the only professional, peer–reviewed, Internet–based publication devoted to original research in medical illustration, biomedical photography, and biocommunication. Our Galleries and Showcases continue to offer beautiful photographic and illustrative imagery relating to our fields.

JBC issue 35–2 features three articles including, “Illustrating Artifacts Using Digital Rendering Techniques” by Marc Dryer and David Mazierski. These authors describe their technique of creating illustrations of archaeological artifacts for scientific publication. More specifically they discuss their method of illustrating flaked lithic artifacts (arrowheads, etc.) utilizing a combination of both traditional and digital rendering techniques. This approach will allow professional illustrators, researchers, and students of archaeology to create competent scientific visuals in conformity with the conventions for this specialized discipline.

Also included is the article “Illustrating Choices at a Pollinators Buffet: High–speed Photography of the Night Flying Moth, Manduca sexta” by Charles Hedgcock. The night flying moth, Manduca sexta, must choose from among a variety of possible nectar sources found in their environment. These important pollinators may shift between food sources based on the abundance and the odor preferences of the particular insect. The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Arizona in Tucson is studying how the moth’s antennae and brain recognize these odors. High–speed photographs were made of free–flying male moths in the laboratory to illustrate this concept of behavioral flexibility and floral preference.

We also feature Nicholas Graver’s memorial tribute to the life and times of Mr. John Vetter, a long–time member of the BPA/BCA. Following World War II, Mr. Vetter became a medical photographer, specializing in the field of photomicrography. On staff at Western Pennsylvania Hospital for 42 years, Mr. Vetter recorded thousands of images for use as teaching tools for physicians throughout the North American and the world. John was a pioneering photomicrographer, author, and devoted teacher.

Our JBC Showcase features environmental portraits by BCA member Joe Kane. As opposed to a single, on–camera electronic flash, the author utilizes multiple flash units that have been placed strategically in the rooms and environments being photographed. Typically our Showcase image portfolios feature biological, medical, or other scientific imagery. However, we include these photographic examples and discussion here, as many institutional photographers routinely are asked to do this type work. Joe has also authored a JBC Insight in this issue, wherein he describes his photographic lighting technique in greater detail.

Our 35–2 Gallery features the award winning photographs, posters, fine art pieces, videos, and imagery from the 79th BIOCOMM conference in Park City, Utah. Congratulations to all the BCA exhibitors and the BioImages Salon winners.

It is my particular pleasure to announce the appointment of our newest JBC Management Board member. Shelley Wall, AOCAD, MScBMC, PhD is joining our Journal Management Board as an AMI representative and as an AMI Co–Editor. Shelley is a faculty mentor with the interdisciplinary Health Care, Technology, and Place initiative at the University of Toronto, and a member of the Coalition for Research in Women's Health at the Women's College Research Institute. She currently teaches courses in bioscientific illustration, research methods in biomedical communication, and writing for healthcare. We welcome Shelley to the Journal and wish her the best.

There are many more JBC issues ahead of us, as we strive to continue our 35–year publishing legacy. We hope to inspire and enhance your understanding of all aspects of biocommunication. Please let us know how we’re doing.
